What is the Salemhognews group?
The Salemhognews group is an email distribution list, hosted and maintained by
Yahoo Inc. We use this free service to keep in touch, announce short notice rides and events.
The group is moderated, and there are rules which must be followed.
Who can join the Salemhognews group?
Only current, paid members of Harley Owners Group, Salem, Oregon Chapter, may
join the Salemhognews group. You must also be a current, paid member of National HOG. This
information will be verified prior to admitting anyone into the Group. Moreover, this information will
be checked periodically to make certain all listed group members are current, both with HOG National and
our local chapter. Anyone whose membership has lapsed will be notified and an appropriate peroid of time,
as determined by the current director, will be given to update your membership. Anyone failing to update
a lapsed membership in the awarded time period will be removed from the group.
How do I join the Group?
To join the Salemhognews group, send the Salemhognews group Moderator an email that
includes your name, your email address, and your National HOG number so your membership
status can be verified. You can email the
group Moderator at: egroups@salemhog.org.
After that, you should receive an email from Yahoo's Group website. This email may even
look like a spam email, so make sure you check it out. Open the email from Yahoo, click
the button inside, and follow Yahoo's directions for setting up your email account. Please
make sure to follow all the steps. Also, make sure you use a password that you can
remember; the Salemhognews group Moderator can not retrieve that information for you.
What are the rules of a moderated Group?
Our rules are simple:
- No racial slurs of any kind.
- No gender bashing.
- Respect the rights and sensibilities of others.
- Treat others the way you would like to be treated.
Also, there will be absolutely no intimidation of any kind toward other group members -
this type of activity will get you immediately banned from the group, and a recommendation
will be made to the board that you be expelled from the group.
How do I change my group email address?
If you followed the instructions when you initially signed up for the Group,
you were directed to create a "User Name" and a "Password" combination as part of your
sign-up procedure. You will need both of these to complete this process. If somehow you
did not create a user name and password combination at the time you signed up for the
group, or if you have since forgotten your user name and password, you may need to have
the group moderator remove you from the group and then re-invite you back into the group.
That will force Yahoo to walk you through the process of setting up a new user ID and a new
password. I would suggest that you write this information down in a safe place, just in
case you need it again.
Using your Internet Browser, go to the following web address->
http://groups.yahoo.com/mygroups. Once there
you should be presented with a log on screen where you will enter your user name and password.
Upon entering that information, if you belong to more than one Yahoo hosted Group, you
may be presented with a list of Group choices. For this example choose "Salemhognews." If
you only belong to the Salemhognews group, you may be directed into the site automatically.
If not, a link to the Salemhognews group will be presented and all you have to do is click
on it.
When the group site opens, you should see a navigation bar (a menu of choices) on the
left hand side of the screen. If not already selected, one of the options will be "Members."
In the Members area you will see your email address and the email addresses of anyone else
belonging to the egroup. The only email account you will be able to affect is your own.
Next to your email address should be a button labeled "Edit."
Why did I stop recieving group emails?
There may be more than one reason you've stopped getting the Salemhognews Group
emails. Starting with your own personal email settings, you may have an email setting which
blocks emails that appear to be spam-like. Because our Group emails come from Yahoo, they may
appear to your email program as spam. Another reason might be that your email settings on
your computer are filtering out emails with specific words in the subject line or in the
body of the email. Check your current email filters to see if you've chosen a word which
might be used often on our group.
By far, the most common reason for missing group email is "Bouncing." The term "Bouncing" is used in Yahoo's eGroup service to indicate email
accounts listed as part of a particular Group list, but for some reason are not receiving
the emails normally. This can happen when the email account's Group settings are set to
receive emails but the account's owner deletes those emails without opening them or reading
them. If it appears the email account is not accepting those emails (because the account owner is
deleting the emails without reading them) Yahoo disables that account, assuming the
account owner no longer wishes to recieve the emails. The more emails deleted, the more
severe the level of "Bouncing." "Hard-Bouncing," the most severe bouncing, results
in a disabling of that account. The account can only be reactivated by responding to
a "Reactivation Email" sent by the group moderator. If you do not respond, your
account will eventually be deleted/removed from the group.

How to "Post"
Salem HOG E-Group
History: created to satisfy the communication needs of the chapter. The Chat group had only a fraction of the membership subscribed. Most members were not interested in receiving all the jokes, comments, and general banter which happened on the Chat group.
The News Group was created for direct communication to the group of chapter news, upcoming
events and rides. There would also be information on upcoming non-chapter events in the area. The
idea was to have a conduit of information where the whole membership could be quickly informed of
items which were directly related to their membership. Estimated volume of messages would be 2 to 5
in a week.
All messages will be moderated and responses will not be allowed. A one-way form of communication. If someone wishes to respond to a message they can contact the poster directly through a separate e-mail. Specific contact information should be supplied in every e-mail.
Types of posts:
Information and announcements about chapter activities
Ride information
Chapter news
HOG news
Information and announcements about non-HOG motorcycle events
Dealer informational posts
Who can post: Moderated :
o All members are moderated unless approved by the dealer and e-group moderator
o Any e-group member can post to the news group if they follow posting guidelines
o Dealer
o Any chapter or board member approved by the dealer and e-group moderator
Every board member will be encouraged to post information and announcements concerning their particular area of concern. For instance, the newsletter Editor would post requests for pictures and story ideas. The Senior Road Captain would post ride announcements. The Director would inform the membership of important decisions or information. Etc.
Posting Guidelines and format:
o Subject line should indicate reason for post. Ride, Event, News, Info and the title of the information.
o Who What When Where should be the first few lines
o A paragraph of explanation or details of the post should follow
o Accurate contact information including phone numbers are required for every post so members can follow up directly to get clarification of details or have any questions answered.
The following is an example of a News Group Posting;
Subject line: Ride- Ballston Turkey Run
Who: All Chapter members and guests
What: Annual Ballston Turkey Dinner Run
When: Last Sunday in October
Where: Meet at Salem Harley Davidson at 10:00am
Annual ride to the Ballston Turkey dinner in Ballston. Meet at Salem Harley-Davidson at 10:00 am to ride to the dinner. This is a chapter ride and guests are welcome but they will need to sign a receipt. Dinner is $7.50 each
For information regarding the Ballston Turkey Dinner call 503-555-1212
For information regarding the actual ride to the Dinner contact ride leader Louise Schuening at 503-555-1212 or e-mail to louisef@rwxyz.com
Please do not respond directly to this post.
A few notes regarding news group postings:
o Always include plenty of contact information in your posts
o Never, unless absolutely necessary, pose questions to the membership
o If you have to pose a question please understand that even the smartest people will not "get" that their response to your message will go into the stratosphere and you will not receive it unless they send their response directly to you in a separate communication.
o Only post information relevant to their membership within the chapter. DO NOT post your opinions, concerns, or editorials.
To join the e-group:
o send a request to the e-group moderator at egroups@salemhog.org
o include e-mail address you wish messages be sent to, your National HOG number and expiration date.
Once the e-group moderator receives your request and verifies membership they will send you an invitation to join. It will be coming from salemhognews@yahoogroups.com. If you have a junk mail filter please take the time to add this address to your safe list so the invitation and subsequent e-mails will pass through the filter into your inbox.
